Spacer & Adapter FAQ

Are your billet wheel spacers and adapters safe?

Why should I buy Performance Wheel & Tire’s premium spacers and adapters?
Our adapters are custom CNC machined from aircraft grade 6061-T6 aluminum to your order, and come with heavy duty pressed in studs. Other companies may not be using certified materials, proper design tolerances, or heavy duty studs. Their adapters may look the same, but may vibrate at speed, or even fail from hidden material or machining defects. We choose to build the best spacers and adapters, using the best components, and will never sacrifice safety.

Can I try out different spacer and adapter thicknesses?

Can I return custom spacers and adapters if they don’t fit?
Sorry, since we machine every set of spacers and adapters to your order we are not able to take returns on them if the fitment wasn’t exactly what you expected. We do take every step to make sure the adapters will fit by putting your order through a screening process that starts right here at www.performancewheel.com . At Performance Wheel & Tire we have been building spacers and adapters for over 20 years and have qualified technicians look through each order before processing even begins. If you do notice a mistake in your measurements and call us before we begin machining on your custom part (Usually within 7 days we begin machining) we would be happy to apply those changes to your order.

Will your wheel spacers and adapters cause vibrations?
Our billet adapters have conical lug nut seats that center the adapter to the hub. If the adapters are first finger tightened in a star pattern, then torqued to 30 ft-lbs, and finally torqued to the correct vehicle torque requirment, the adapters will center themselves to the lug nuts. We do for safety practices recommend you re-torque your wheel spacers or adapters after driving on them for a period of 50-100 miles. This lets the lug nuts seat to the spacers or adapters. After they’ve been installed, you can treat the spacers or adapters just like a set of wheels. We’ve never seen any lug nuts loosen when properly installed.

Do the bolt-on wheel spacers or adapters increase the load on suspension parts?
The suspension loads are only affected by the centerline of the wheel. Billet adapters usually correct offset issues when bolting newer style high offset wheels onto older cars or trucks that were designed with low offset wheels. A wheel with a 25mm offset and a 1″ adapter is identical to the suspension as a 0mm factory wheel. These loads are the same on the wheel studs, bearings, bushings, because the wheel is in exactly the same location on the car.

Will my studs break if I use bolt on wheel spacers or adapters?
Are slip-on wheel spacers safe?
Slip on wheel spacers are safe, as long as you limit them to 1/4″ or less. As the wheel is moved further out, the bending load on the wheel stud increases. We don’t recommend using slip-on wheel spacers greater than 1/4″ thick. New heavy duty studs are recommended as well. Slip on wheel spacers are not the same as bolt-on wheel spacers or adapters.

Can I use your spacers or adapters for racing or rock crawling?
Our wheel spacers and adapters are built from the finest quality of aluminum to allow the greatest strength possible. We currently run these on many championship rock buggies from Poison Spider Customs and Colorado Custom Crawlers. The race scene is also using our custom wheel spacers and adapters to give their race cars a wider rear stance witch improves stability and tracking. At Performance Wheel & Tire we have been building our Spacers and Adapters for over 20 years and have yet to see one fail even under these extreme circumstances.

Can you build your spacers and adapters in steel?
We choose to build our adapters from billet aluminum. When properly engineered, the adapters are stronger than the hub they bolt onto, so it doesn’t make sense to machine much heavier adapters from steel. Our adapters have been used on heavily modified 4×4 trucks, rock crawlers, and full-size trucks, without any problems.

I have wheels that have a different number of studs. Can you machine wheel adapters to let me use the wheels?
Sorry, Performance Wheel & Tire does not convert the amount of lugs only the spacing. For example you can not put 4 lug wheels to a 5 lug vehicle or visa versa. The spacing of the new studs would interfere with the holes to bolt on to your existing studs. This changing of bolt patterns can be done by two piece wheel adapters, however using a two piece aluminum wheel adapter will greatly increase the stress on the wheel adapter and can cause breaking of the bolts holding the two pieces together. We do offer a 10 to 8 lug conversion and build this adapter in steel for greater strength.

How long will it take to machine the custom wheel spacers and adapters?
We like to have two weeks to schedule and machine the custom wheel adapters. This lets us machine similar adapters in batches, to lower your cost. If you have an event you’re planning on attending sooner, please contact us, and we’ll try to reschedule your adapters to get them sooner. We can also ship 2nd day and overnight to save shipping time.

Do your billet spacers and adapters come with lug nuts?
Can you machine spacers and adapters thinner than 1″?
Should I use anti-seize on the studs? Will it cause the lug nuts to loosen easier?
Definitely! A small dab of anti-seize on both the hub and the spacer’s or adapter’s studs make torque values much more consistent, and prevent the lug nut from seizing after hard racing or a cold Colorado winter. As you torque the lug nut to spec, the stud acts like a spring, and gets pre-loaded. This tension in the stud is what holds the lug nut tight against the wheel (or spacer/adapter). By lubricating the stud with anti-seize, you make sure the torque on the lug nut will go to tensioning the stud, rather than friction that does not increase the tension, and will make it easier to lose pre-load and loosen. As long as there is tension, the lug nut will not loosen.

Can I us and adapter for 10 lug semi-truck wheels to my 8 lug pickup truck?
We do offer these adapters; They are made from steel and are a custom order item. We do not currently have them available for purchase on our web site because the information we need to collect to make the spacers properly is different in almost every case. If you would like to order these wheel adapters please visit our community forums and “Ask an Expert” or call our custom order line at (866) 375-5790 Monday-Friday 8-6 Mountain Standard Time
